You often encounter examples of ancient architectural elements as you drive through the city, walk through a park, or even examine the details of our money. We can thank Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans for obelisks, columns, domes, and arches. We see the examples of ancient Greek architecture everywhere, even downtown Fredericton! The most important contribution would be columns (orders, there are 3 types of orders that Greeks made, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. On all of the government buildings downtown, there are columns, or orders. It is important to architecture that the Greeks created the columns, because it is a stylish thing to have one your house and they are used for support on buildings.
Orders
Doric:
The Doric style is rather sturdy and its top (the capital), is plain and simple. This style was used in mainland Greece and in the areas of southern Italy and Sicily. Parthenon- a temple called Athena Parthenos, Greek goddess of wisdom, found on the Aropolis in Athens.
Ionic:
The Ionic style is thinner and more elegant. Its capital is decorated with a scroll-like design. This style was found in eastern Greece. Ionic temples were a little fancier and more delicate than the Doric temples. They used this design more offen than the Corthian style.
Corinthian:
The Corinthian style is rarely used in the Greek world, but often seen on Roman temples. Its capital is very elaborate and decorated with acanthus leaves. The Corinthian style of order wasn’t used as much as the Doric or Ionic in Greece but in Rome they used it a lot. This was because the Corinthian order was more fancy and heavy.
